LEGAL
BRIEFS
Friends...and
enemies, the time has come. We kept it a secret for
a long time, but alas, the secret is out. Here, briefly, is what the
score is.
Their
lawyers first descended upon us in Feb. 2002 with a
Cease & Desist Order. We responded with a kind "Thanks but
no thanks."
Then, in April of 2003 they struck hard by filing an official complaint
with the World Intellectual Property Organization, in Geneva, Switzerland.
This offensive had the stated
goal of transferring the Aberzombie.com
domain name to Them. If we lost, Aberzombie.com would be history.
We geared up for the fight, did our homework, and formed a defense.
Our official response, while brilliant in and of itself, was made more
so
by the fact that we used no lawyers whatsoever. Foolish, some said,
as we were pitted against a top Manhattan intellectual property law
firm.
But then again, we saved ourselves roughly $25,000 in basic hourly fees.
The ruling came down on June 10. To
